WASHINGTON — Anthony Davis confirmed Monday that he intends to play the 2026-27 season with the Washington Wizards, expressing confidence that the franchise can evolve from league cellar-dweller to playoff contender.

“I want to be able to have fun where I am. I want to be able to compete where I am. I want to be able to learn wherever I am — and this organization has that,” the 33-year-old forward said during the team’s season-ending news conference.

Washington finished 2025-26 at 17-65, the NBA’s worst record and the club’s third consecutive season with at least 64 defeats. Despite the struggles, Davis cited the Wizards’ young core and recent roster moves as reasons for optimism.

The eight-time All-Star arrived in February in an eight-player deal with Dallas, shortly after Washington landed high-scoring guard Trae Young from Atlanta. Davis believes that combination, together with emerging prospects, can accelerate the rebuild. “Adding Trae and myself kind of can help change that,” he said.

Asked if he envisioned remaining in Washington beyond next year, Davis noted he is already under contract for 2026-27. Laughing, he added, “I love my money.”

Davis has been sidelined since Jan. 8 with a sprained finger on his non-shooting hand but said he plans to meet with team executives soon to discuss their blueprint for contention. “They know that I want to win. I’m sure that they want to win as well. Nobody wants to lose,” he said.

The Wizards have not posted a winning season since 2020-21.
