With the NBA season set to open in just over a week, former MVP Russell Westbrook remains without a contract — and he is not looking overseas. Veteran reporter Marc Stein says there have been no conversations about the 36-year-old guard playing anywhere but the NBA. Weekend reports pointed to mutual interest between Westbrook and the Sacramento Kings, who are seeking an experienced backup guard, yet the nine-time All-Star is prepared to wait for an NBA offer even if it arrives after opening night.
Giannis–Knicks Talk Adds to New York Optimism
Speculation that Giannis Antetokounmpo might consider the New York Knicks should he ever leave Milwaukee is being viewed inside Madison Square Garden as evidence of the franchise’s improving reputation. Newsday’s Steve Popper wrote that the chatter reflects the organizational overhaul led by team president Leon Rose. Separately, the New York Post’s Stefan Bondy outlined several theoretical trade packages, though any discussion of moving the two-time MVP remains firmly hypothetical.
Grizzlies Sign Charlie Brown Jr., Release Tyler Burton
The Memphis Grizzlies have added journeyman guard Charlie Brown Jr. and waived forward Tyler Burton. Brown, 28, has appeared with five NBA teams since 2019 and spent last season with Raptors 905 in the G League, where he averaged 12.5 points and tied a league mark with nine steals in a single game. Memphis already carries 15 guaranteed contracts, so Brown is expected to report to the G League’s Memphis Hustle on an Exhibit 10 deal that could earn him up to $85,300 in bonuses. Burton, who played collegiately at Richmond and Villanova, is also likely to return to the Hustle after averaging 2.5 points in limited minutes a season ago.
Officials Experiment With Earpieces
NBA referees have been wearing in-ear communication devices during preseason contests in an effort to enhance on-court coordination. According to Stein, the league could adopt the technology full-time once regular-season play begins.
