Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James ignited speculation across social media on Monday when he promised a “Second Decision” announcement for Tuesday morning. The buildup ended with the unveiling of a new advertising partnership with Hennessy, not news about retirement or a team change.
James, whose 2010 television special “The Decision” detailed his departure from the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat, posted a short video on X (formerly Twitter) alongside Hennessy early Tuesday. The clip concluded with the tagline “The Decision has been made. Cheers to year 23,” confirming the promotion of the cognac brand’s V.S.O.P. line.
The Monday tease prompted widespread conjecture that the 40-year-old might announce the upcoming season as his last or signal an exit from the Lakers. Secondary ticket markets reacted quickly, with prices for Los Angeles’ April 14 regular-season finale against the Utah Jazz spiking on the possibility of James’ final NBA game.
This marks the second time in 2025 that James has previewed a “major” announcement only to reveal a commercial tie-in. A similar tease earlier in the offseason introduced an Amazon campaign.
Lakers Focus on Detail Entering 2025-26
While retirement remains a subject of public conversation, James reiterated that his attention is on the imminent season. Speaking to reporters at training camp, he outlined the approach he believes Los Angeles must take to contend in a crowded Western Conference.
“We have to be detailed on everything, on all facets of the game, both offensively and defensively,” James said. “We have to hold each other accountable, and we’ve got to play championship basketball every single day.” He added that results will fluctuate in a “win-loss league,” but attention to detail should keep the Lakers competitive.
James is entering his 23rd NBA season and maintains All-Star production levels, averaging 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 8.1 assists in 2024-25. There is no formal timeline for his retirement.
