OAKLAND, Calif. — With his new contract finally signed, veteran center Al Horford spoke publicly Wednesday about why he chose the Golden State Warriors and why his free-agency process dragged on until October.
Horford, 39, said he still feels capable of contributing at a high level and viewed Golden State as the best place to chase another championship alongside Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, head coach Steve Kerr and mid-season acquisition Jimmy Butler. He acknowledged that leaving the Boston Celtics was difficult but called the opportunity with the Warriors “too good to pass up.”
The five-time All-Star reached an agreement with Golden State shortly after free agency opened in late June, yet the deal could not become official until the club resolved contract terms with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga. Horford described the summer as “unusual,” noting that he focused on training while awaiting clearance to sign.
Locker-room outlook for Kuminga
Kerr dismissed concerns that Kuminga might be disgruntled after accepting a two-year pact that includes only a team option in the second season. The coach said he maintained regular contact with the 22-year-old forward and plans to discuss the situation when Kuminga reports to training camp. Kerr, who has worked with Kuminga for four years, said the player is not someone who would disrupt team chemistry.
Melton’s perspective on December trade
Guard De’Anthony Melton, who tore his ACL early last season before being dealt to the Brooklyn Nets in December, said he harbors no resentment toward the Warriors. “Business is business,” he told reporters, adding that he likely would have made the same trade if roles were reversed. Melton re-signed with Golden State this summer in part because he enjoyed his brief stint with the team and values its medical staff.
Dunleavy satisfied with offseason moves
General manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. expressed enthusiasm about the roster he assembled after an extended offseason. “Everything is signed, sealed and delivered,” Dunleavy said, pointing to a mix of seasoned stars, key returnees and young players expected to take on larger roles. He believes the group will contend in the Western Conference this season.
The Warriors open training camp next week with 14 guaranteed contracts and one open roster spot.
