The Cleveland Cavaliers head into training camp with the NBA’s highest payroll and a growing list of rotation questions. While stars Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley anchor the roster, early camp buzz centers on role players pressed into larger responsibilities.
Strus likely sidelined until All-Star break
Wing shooter Max Strus is expected to miss action until at least the All-Star break, limiting Cleveland’s perimeter spacing. In his absence, Sam Merrill will receive expanded duties that include additional ball-handling and on-ball creation. Head coach Kenny Atkinson also plans to lean on Merrill’s improved defense to steady the second unit.
Tyson assigned tough defensive matchup
Second-year guard Jaylon Tyson has been tasked with guarding Mitchell in practice sessions. The coaching staff views Tyson’s defensive versatility as his quickest path to regular minutes and believes challenging him against an All-Star scorer will speed his development.
Hunter impresses staff, eyes starting role
The Cavaliers spent part of the offseason evaluating De’Andre Hunter and emerged encouraged by his progress. Team officials say they are more comfortable with his fit and deployment options, and Hunter has told the organization he is ready to start if needed.
Hayes to log heavy preseason minutes
Guard Killian Hayes, who arrived with positive reviews from contacts tied to the French national program, is slated for extensive preseason run. With Garland on a gradual ramp-up and Mitchell’s minutes being managed, Hayes could provide early backcourt depth before a possible assignment to the G League’s Cleveland Charge.
Frontcourt gains Nance Jr. and Bryant
Cleveland secured both Larry Nance Jr. and Thomas Bryant in free agency after initially appearing to choose between the two. The dual signing gives Atkinson greater lineup flexibility. The staff hopes Bryant’s ability to stretch the floor will help introduce a five-out look and push Allen to defend more frequently away from the basket.
As camp opens, the league’s most expensive roster is counting on its newest and lesser-known pieces to keep the Cavaliers on track until Strus returns.
