Free-agent forward/center Al Horford has reached a multiyear agreement with the Golden State Warriors, agent Jason Glushon told ESPN’s Shams Charania on September 28, 2025.
Horford, 39, is expected to open his 19th NBA season as Golden State’s starting center. League sources said the Warriors identified the veteran as a priority early in free agency and secured his commitment days before training camp begins. Contract details remain unsettled while the club manages Jonathan Kuminga’s restricted-free-agency situation.
According to The Boston Globe, the five-time All-Star weighed several factors before leaving Boston, including Jayson Tatum’s torn Achilles and the offseason exits of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. Horford spent seven of the past nine years with the Celtics and helped the franchise capture its 18th championship in 2024. He posted a public thank-you to the organization and the city on social media.
Golden State views the 6-foot-9 Dominican as a complementary piece alongside Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green, citing his size, perimeter shooting, playmaking and defensive versatility. Charania reported that Horford considered retirement before choosing the Warriors, a club frequently linked to him throughout the offseason.
The former No. 3 overall pick out of Florida has logged five All-Star nods, one All-NBA selection and one All-Defensive honor since entering the league in 2007. His teams have made multiple trips to the Eastern Conference Finals, and he appeared in the 2022 NBA Finals against Golden State.
The Warriors are also expected to finalize deals with DeAnthony Melton and Gary Payton II in the coming days. Seth Curry, Stephen’s younger brother, has been linked to the roster as well. Golden State still holds the rights to unsigned second-round picks Will Richard and Alex Toohey and has a qualifying offer out to two-way restricted free agent Taran Armstrong.
