With NBA training camps scheduled to start on Monday, two former All-Stars—Russell Westbrook and Ben Simmons—remain without contracts.
Westbrook, 35, is a former league MVP and widely considered a future Hall of Famer. Simmons, 28, was the No. 1 overall pick in 2016 and has three All-Star selections. Yet as of Saturday, neither player has secured a roster spot for the 2024-25 season.
Salary Expectations a Sticking Point
League insiders told Hoops Wire that both veterans are seeking deals above the veteran minimum, but front offices have shown little interest at that price. An NBA scout said the pair could still contribute “only on minimum salaries,” citing reduced athleticism for Westbrook and ongoing questions about Simmons’s health and shooting.
Concerns Over Fit and Durability
Westbrook’s explosive first step, once his trademark, has diminished, while Simmons has struggled with availability and perimeter shooting consistency. Another scout noted that teams can find younger players with similar skill sets “for cheaper,” making patience the prevailing approach as camps begin.
Although opportunities could emerge later, no club appears ready to move quickly. The lack of urgency underscores how much the market has shifted for two players who were once considered franchise cornerstones.
