Free agent forward Draymond Green is returning to the Golden State Warriors on a one-year contract worth $27,678,571, agent Rich Paul told ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The agreement mirrors the player option Green declined in June, a move that temporarily freed cap space while the club pursued LeBron James. Green, 36, now remains under contract through the 2026-27 season, when he will enter unrestricted free agency. He is not eligible for an extension before then.
Green appeared in 68 games last season, averaging 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in 27.5 minutes. The 2017 Defensive Player of the Year shot 41.8 percent from the field, 32.6 percent from three-point range and 70.2 percent at the foul line. A nine-time All-Defensive selection, he finished the 2024-25 campaign as a Defensive Player of the Year finalist and first-team honoree.
According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, Green would have accepted a multi-year deal at a lower first-year salary had the Warriors signed James. Instead, the one-season arrangement does not include a formal no-trade clause, though NBA rules grant Green veto power this season because he re-signed with his previous team. Waiving that right before the 2027 trade deadline would leave him with only Non-Bird rights next offseason.
The new contract pushes Golden State above the first tax apron. As a result, the Warriors will use the taxpayer mid-level exception to finalize a two-year, $11 million agreement with guard De’Anthony Melton. Once both deals are completed, the team will have 12 players on standard contracts and sit about $8.3 million below the second-apron hard cap, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
Golden State can technically fill its 15-man roster with three minimum-salary players but may keep the final spot open for added flexibility. Roster and cap figures could still shift if the front office completes trades before Opening Night.
With Green on a one-year pact, he joins Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Brandin Podziemski on expiring contracts. Podziemski is eligible for a rookie-scale extension this summer, Curry becomes extension-eligible on Aug. 29, and Butler can negotiate a new deal in February. If no extensions are signed and no additional long-term salaries are added, Golden State would carry roughly $41 million in guaranteed money into the 2027-28 season.
