DENVER — Forward Spencer Jones said Monday that the Denver Nuggets’ choice to match a rival club’s offer sheet — described by the team as the largest in franchise history — was the expected outcome of what he called a “business decision.”
Speaking publicly for the first time since the agreement was finalized on July 27, 2026, Jones told reporters that he entered restricted free agency prepared for any scenario. “I knew the numbers and I understood the market,” he said. “At the end of the day, this is a business. I had to look out for myself, and the Nuggets did what they had to do.”
The undisclosed offer sheet triggered a 48-hour window in which Denver could either retain Jones under identical contract terms or let him walk. By matching, the Nuggets kept the 6-foot-8 wing under team control through the life of the new multiyear deal.
Club executives declined to reveal financial figures but confirmed the agreement exceeds the organization’s previous highs for a restricted free agent. General manager Calvin Booth said matching the offer was “an easy call,” citing Jones’s two-way production and fit alongside Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray.
Jones averaged career bests across the board last season, including 14.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 79 games, while shooting 39 percent from beyond the arc. He credited the coaching staff and veteran core for his growth. “They believed in me from Day 1,” he said. “That mattered when I weighed my options.”
The forward added that no ill will exists toward the team that tendered the original sheet. “They put a number on my value, and I respect that,” Jones said. “But Denver is home.”
With the roster largely intact, the Nuggets will enter training camp aiming for a third straight Western Conference title. Jones said the group’s focus now shifts from contract talk to on-court goals. “The business side is over,” he said. “It’s time to chase another ring.”
