The Los Angeles Lakers have yet to fill their second assistant general manager slot, a key position that would oversee scouting and player development, despite months of interviews that reportedly left some candidates uncertain about the club’s process.
General manager Rob Pelinka outlined plans early in the offseason to hire two assistant GMs. The franchise brought in Rohan Ramadas to run strategy and data systems, but the companion role remains open.
According to The Athletic’s Dan Woike, the Lakers interviewed several people dating back to last season, yet no hire has been finalized. League sources told the outlet that prospective candidates found the interview structure confusing. Minnesota Timberwolves executive Steve Senior and Philadelphia 76ers executive Prosper Karangwa are widely believed to have declined offers, opting to stay with their current teams.
The vacancy highlights a long-standing issue in the Lakers’ scouting operation. The organization’s 2025-26 media guide lists only three full-time domestic scouts and two international scouts, all of whom have focused primarily on amateur evaluations, sources said. Expanding the department is viewed internally as an urgent need.
Why the hiring effort has stalled is unclear, particularly after Ramadas was secured quickly to head analytics. The front office continues to search for a leader capable of strengthening both pro scouting and player development.
Lakers weigh two-way deal for Summer League standout
While the front-office search continues, the team is considering a two-way contract for forward Arthur Kaluma, who paced Los Angeles in scoring during Summer League play and connected on 50 percent of his three-point attempts in Las Vegas.
