The Los Angeles Lakers have secured free-agent forward Matisse Thybulle on a one-year contract worth $3.3 million, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The agreement was reached Monday, July 20, 2026, giving the club another perimeter defender as it reshapes the roster around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
Thybulle, 29, is a two-time NBA All-Defensive Team selection. League sources said he spoke with JJ Redick and Doncic during free agency before committing to Los Angeles. Charania noted that the 6-foot-5 wing converted 41.8 percent of his three-point attempts over the past two seasons, a span limited to 45 games because of injuries.
Roster implications
The signing pushes the Lakers to 16 guaranteed contracts, one above the regular-season limit. The front office must trim the roster to 15 players before Opening Night.
Recent performance
Drafted No. 20 overall by Philadelphia in 2019, Thybulle spent last season with the Portland Trail Blazers. In 30 appearances, he averaged 5.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals while shooting 39.8 percent from beyond the arc on 3.1 attempts per game. For his career, he owns a 34.9 percent mark from deep.
Busy offseason in Los Angeles
General manager Rob Pelinka has overhauled the roster this summer, adding Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Collin Sexton, Kevon Looney, Jaden Hardy and Ziaire Williams through trades and free agency. Departures include LeBron James, Marcus Smart, Rui Hachimura, Deandre Ayton, Jaxson Hayes and Luke Kennard.
The Lakers will open training camp later this fall with an emphasis on integrating their newest pieces and solidifying the final lineup.
