LeBron James said the chance to capture a fifth NBA title will guide his free-agency decision, but he declined to signal which franchise is in front during a live taping of “The Shop” at Fanatics Fest on Friday.
“I want to compete at a high level,” James told the audience. “I want to join a franchise that practices championship habits every day.” He added that he values organizations that “trust the process,” a remark that drew laughs and cheers because of its long-standing connection to the 76ers. James quickly clarified that he has used the phrase since entering the league in 2003 and was not hinting at Philadelphia.
James emphasized focusing on daily work instead of looking ahead to the postseason: “If you’re already worried about the championship or the playoffs, you’ll skip steps along that journey.”
League observers see Miami as a logical fit. The Heat added Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason, and head coach Erik Spoelstra has a résumé James respects. Warm weather—and the star’s well-known love of golf—also favor South Florida, though James downplayed climate as a factor, noting he can “always find a golf simulator” in colder cities and prefers to concentrate on basketball during the season.
Miami’s finances remain tight. The Antetokounmpo deal triggered a hard cap at the first apron, limiting the Heat to about $6.5 million of their mid-level exception for James. Team president Pat Riley said Miami has “only a couple of roster spots left” and is “waiting like you guys are waiting,” but could create room by moving salary.
James, 41, spent four seasons with the Heat from 2010 to 2014, winning two championships. That history, combined with several off-court business ventures in Northeast Ohio, positions Miami and Cleveland as the perceived favorites, although the four-time MVP has kept details private since free agency opened.
Additional Notes
• Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards told reporters at Fanatics Fest that Minnesota is not among James’s top three targets.
• ESPN’s Dave McMenamin said conversations in New York suggest James is “likely to head east,” naming the Heat, Cavaliers and 76ers as front-runners. McMenamin added that the Warriors and Timberwolves have not been formally eliminated.
• Sports Illustrated’s Anthony Pendone highlighted James’s extensive business interests in Northeast Ohio as a potential lure back to Cleveland.
James is expected to make his choice soon as teams finalize summer rosters.
