DENVER — The Nuggets are preparing for a potentially prolonged restricted-free-agency stretch with 23-year-old wing Peyton Watson, according to multiple league insiders.
Watson market complicated by cap situations
The Bucks, Clippers and Hawks have expressed interest in the 2022 first-round pick, but all three clubs are operating over the salary cap. Any successful pursuit would therefore require a sign-and-trade arrangement. Denver officials believe that dynamic gives them a favorable path to retain Watson and are willing to let the process play out, sources said. Last summer four top restricted free agents did not sign until September, illustrating how slowly the market can move when cap space is scarce.
Joerger viewed as frontrunner for lead assistant post
Veteran coach Dave Joerger, an NBA head or assistant coach since 2007, is increasingly expected to join David Adelman’s staff as lead assistant, league reporter Marc Stein noted. Joerger interviewed for the job in June and also drew interest from EuroLeague club Paris Basketball, but he is leaning toward remaining in the NBA.
Roddy’s future uncertain amid crowded frontcourt
Denver holds strong interest in bringing back forward David Roddy, a former Colorado State star, yet roster math may work against a reunion in 2026-27. After finishing last season on a two-way contract, Roddy is no longer eligible for another two-way deal, and the Nuggets’ frontcourt depth could push the team to prioritize a guard if another signing is made.
Jones, Diallo and Bagley contracts finalized
The Nuggets recently completed one-year guaranteed minimum agreements with free agents Tyus Jones, Alpha Diallo and Marvin Bagley III. Jones and Bagley carry $2,449,421 cap hits, while Diallo’s cap charge is $1,357,763; for tax and apron calculations, Diallo is assessed at $2,449,421 because of rookie-scale variance rules.
Denver’s roster now features its key minimum additions, with the front office turning its attention to Watson’s restricted free agency and finalizing the coaching staff.
