LeBron James signaled Thursday that his long-awaited free-agency choice is close, telling attendees at the CNBC x Boardroom Game Plan Summit in New York, “I won’t hold you guys up too much longer.” The remark came hours after the Los Angeles Lakers star appeared at Fanatics Fest and recorded an episode of his “Mind the Game” podcast with Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton.

During the podcast taping, James sidestepped several playful attempts by Haliburton to pry out his next destination. He also acknowledged chants from the audience that included the Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat, joking that one spectator even urged him to join the New York Yankees.

Asked by an 11-year-old fan how he approaches free agency, the four-time MVP said the choice affects more than just basketball. “It’s a big decision, not only for myself, but for my family as well,” he replied.

James added that he expects to assume a leadership role wherever he signs. “I’m a natural-born leader,” he noted. “I’m going to try to fit in with whatever team I go to but also give them all the tools and knowledge I’ve gained over the last 23 years.”

He also offered a public thank-you to the Lakers, mentioning owner Jeanie Buss, general manager Rob Pelinka, his coaches and teammates after what he described as eight seasons with the franchise.

League insiders continue to tell Hoops Wire that the Cleveland Cavaliers are widely viewed as the favorites to bring James back, though Miami, Philadelphia and Golden State remain in pursuit.

If James’s latest comments are any indication, the league may not have to wait much longer for his decision.
