The NBA has launched an inquiry into the Milwaukee Bucks’ four-year, $64 million contract with guard Gary Trent Jr., league sources said Thursday.
Bucks
Trent, 25, officially signed the new agreement this week after averaging 8.1 points last season, his lowest output since 2020-21. His playing time declined steadily and he logged several healthy scratches.
The league is examining whether Milwaukee and Trent had an understanding in place before this summer’s deal that would violate salary-cap rules. Trent first joined the Bucks in 2024 on a minimum contract, accepted a modest raise in 2025, and now receives a major payday through Early Bird rights. If investigators find evidence of a prearranged plan to circumvent the cap, penalties could follow. For now, the situation remains a review. The Bucks can cite Trent’s previous market value and reported rival interest at a similar salary as proof the terms were negotiated properly.
Warriors
Golden State has retained center Charles Bassey, 25, after a five-game stint late last season. Team officials believe the 6-11 big man can bolster the frontcourt behind veterans Al Horford and Kristaps Porziņģis. Assistant coach Khalid Robinson praised Bassey’s energy, rebounding and rim protection, traits the Warriors may need if either starter misses time.
Nuggets
Denver completed a one-year, fully guaranteed deal with forward Alpha Diallo. The 29-year-old guard/forward spent the past five seasons with AS Monaco and was named 2023-24 EuroLeague Defensive Player of the Year after averaging 11.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and a league-high 57 steals. Diallo joins newcomers Marvin Bagley III and Tyus Jones as the Nuggets reshape the supporting cast around MVP center Nikola Jokić.
