The Los Angeles Lakers’ pursuit of center Walker Kessler was reportedly driven in part by Luka Dončić, who advocated behind the scenes for the deal, according to Iztok Franko of DigginBasketball.
Franko wrote that individuals familiar with the discussions said Dončić “pushed hard” for Los Angeles to secure Kessler from the Utah Jazz, viewing the 22-year-old as the ideal frontcourt partner.
Trade Details
To complete the sign-and-trade, the Lakers sent Utah two unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, plus the right to swap first-rounders in 2028 and 2030. Kessler subsequently agreed to a four-year, $130 million contract with Los Angeles.
Why Kessler Fits
Kessler has never been selected to an All-Star Game, yet he has built a reputation as one of the league’s top rim protectors. Over his career, he has averaged 9.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.4 blocks while converting more than 68 percent of his field-goal attempts.
The 7-footer is considered an elite lob target who offers shot-blocking without requiring high usage on offense—traits that historically complement Dončić’s playmaking style.
Whether the steep draft compensation eventually pays off remains to be seen, but the Lakers elected to sacrifice future picks to deliver the defensive anchor Dončić reportedly wanted.
