No one inside the NBA can say with conviction where LeBron James will sign this summer, according to a column by veteran writer Terry Pluto of Cleveland.com.
Pluto wrote that executives, scouts and reporters have privately echoed the same refrain: the four-time MVP’s next destination remains a mystery. One team executive told Pluto, “I have no idea where LeBron will sign. I really don’t think anyone does.”
Several clubs still see a chance
Recent chatter points to the Cleveland Cavaliers as a perceived favorite, sources told Pluto, while the Golden State Warriors are viewed as a serious contender. The Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets also believe they remain in the running, league sources told Hoops Wire.
Rich Paul’s podcast fuels speculation
Interest intensified after a recent episode of the “Game Over” podcast hosted by James’s agent, Rich Paul. A whiteboard seen during the show listed 10 possible landing spots. During the episode, Paul highlighted positives in Cleveland, praised Cavaliers assistant general manager Brandon Weems and referenced James’s close relationship with guard Darius Garland. He also said Philadelphia’s trade for Jaylen Brown had improved the 76ers’ appeal.
Despite the mounting rumors, Pluto cautioned readers not to confuse growing belief with certainty: “I don’t trust that thought process,” he wrote of the notion that Cleveland now leads the race.
James, 39, has reached free agency three times before—2010, 2014 and 2018—each time announcing his choice only when he was ready. With that history in mind, league observers acknowledge that firm answers may not come until the four-time champion reveals them himself.
