The Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly reserving multiple roster spots as they pursue a possible reunion with LeBron James — and a potential move for his son, Bronny James, should the four-time MVP sign in Ohio for a third stint.
League insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer said the Cavaliers want the flexibility to trade for Bronny, whose contract with the Los Angeles Lakers was guaranteed one day before LeBron informed the team he would not return for his 24th NBA season. Cleveland, a second-apron club, can only offer LeBron a veteran-minimum deal.
Bronny, 21, completed his sophomore campaign with Los Angeles, appearing in spot minutes during the postseason and scoring five points in Game 3 of the first-round series against the Houston Rockets.
LeBron, 41, is expected to weigh all options that give him a realistic chance to contend for another championship. The Eastern Conference has undergone significant changes, with Kawhi Leonard traded back to the Toronto Raptors, Giannis Antetokounmpo joining the Miami Heat, Jaylen Brown moving to the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Indiana Pacers anticipating the return of Tyrese Haliburton.
If the Lakers can secure a second-round pick or other draft assets, the organization is believed to be open to sending Bronny wherever his father decides to play.
Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul recently explained that LeBron’s departure from Los Angeles had been building, noting the superstar played last season on a one-year deal with no serious extension talks.
