The Washington Wizards are moving lead assistant coach David Vanterpool into a front-office role and elevating assistant Adam Caporn to top assistant on head coach Brian Keefe’s staff, according to The Athletic.
Vanterpool, 53, joined Washington in 2023 and has served as Keefe’s lead assistant for the past two and a half seasons. His NBA résumé includes assistant stops with Portland, Minnesota, and Brooklyn. From 2010 to 2012 he worked as the Oklahoma City Thunder’s director of player personnel, a stint that once positioned him as a potential future general manager.
Caporn, 44, has been on the Wizards’ bench since 2024. The Australian native is also the head coach of the Boomers, Australia’s men’s national team. He entered the NBA in 2021-22 as head coach of the Long Island Nets and spent the next two seasons as an assistant with Brooklyn before heading to Washington.
Additional staff changes are underway: ESPN reported Saturday that Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing will join the Wizards as an assistant coach, while former Hornets head coach Steve Clifford will serve as a coaching advisor.
