Veteran swingman Garrett Temple, 40, is retiring from the NBA to become an assistant coach under new Dallas Mavericks head coach Dusty May, agent Dan Eveloff confirmed Saturday.

NBA insider Marc Stein reported Friday that May was recruiting Temple for the position and received confirmation of the move the following day. Temple will join a bench that already includes assistant Willie Green; the two worked together when Green coached Temple for two seasons in New Orleans.

Temple spent the past three years with the Toronto Raptors, serving mainly as a veteran mentor. He appeared in 22 games during the 2025-26 season, logging 73 total minutes.

Reporters in Toronto, including Blake Murphy, Michael Grange and Josh Lewenberg, highlighted Temple’s teaching skills and leadership qualities following news of his transition to coaching.

Undrafted out of LSU in 2009, Temple played for 12 NBA teams over 16 seasons. After brief stops with five clubs in his first two years and a season in Italy, he landed with the Washington Wizards and stayed four seasons. Temple finished his career with averages of 5.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists on .399/.342/.744 shooting in 793 regular-season games, starting 289 and averaging 19.6 minutes.
