CLEVELAND — Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star point guard Darius Garland has resumed on-court workouts after offseason toe surgery, team president of basketball operations Koby Altman said Tuesday.

Altman delivered the update during a joint press conference with new head coach Kenny Atkinson. While Garland is participating in basketball activities, Altman emphasized that the organization has not set a target for his full return. “We’re encouraged by the work he’s done in the weight room as his injury heals,” Altman told reporters.

The 24-year-old underwent surgery in June to repair a big toe injury sustained late last season. The issue sidelined him during the postseason, and his brief appearance in the second-round series against the Indiana Pacers was hampered by lingering discomfort.

Atkinson noted last month that Garland’s recovery was progressing but cautioned that the guard might not be ready for full contact when the team reconvenes. “Under-promise and over-deliver,” Atkinson said at the time, adding that medical staff and Garland will determine the appropriate timeline.

Cleveland, coming off a 64-18 campaign, opens training camp next Tuesday, Sept. 30, in Florida. Until Garland is cleared for game action, Atkinson said ball-handling duties will be shared by Donovan Mitchell, Lonzo Ball and rookie Craig Porter Jr., with forward Evan Mobley also expected to facilitate offense in certain sets.
