The Oklahoma City Thunder have waived guard/forward Payton Sandfort, the club announced today. The 6’7” swingman had been on a two-way contract.
Sandfort, a former University of Iowa standout, signed his two-way deal with Oklahoma City in March after spending most of the season with the organization’s G League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue. He logged four NBA appearances and finished the regular season with a 23-point, 9-for-13 shooting performance against the Phoenix Suns after the Thunder had already secured the Western Conference’s No. 1 seed.
In 25 games for the Blue, Sandfort averaged 10.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists over 28.0 minutes per outing while shooting .374 from the field, .333 from three-point range and .833 at the free-throw line.
His release gives Oklahoma City three open two-way slots, though the team’s plans may already be in place. The Thunder have extended a two-way qualifying offer to Brooks Barnhizer, reportedly reached a two-way agreement with undrafted rookie Josh Dix and could earmark another two-way deal for second-round pick Otega Oweh.
Sandfort is listed on the Thunder’s Summer League roster, leaving open the possibility of a return to the Blue even without an NBA contract.
