The Los Angeles Lakers officially entered a new chapter on July 1, 2026, when LeBron James informed the organization he would finish his NBA career with another team. In the wake of that decision, guard Austin Reaves—now the club’s longest-tenured player—publicly thanked James for their years together.

Reaves posted an Instagram message shortly after the news broke, expressing gratitude for the relationship they built since he joined the Lakers as an undrafted free agent in 2021. The two developed a strong on-court chemistry highlighted by their shared playmaking and high basketball IQ.

A photo from Nov. 18, 2025, captured the connection: James embraced Reaves during a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Crypto.com Arena. That partnership is now over, but Reaves said he plans to apply lessons learned from the 21-year veteran as he assumes a leadership role on a roster that suddenly lists him as both its oldest and most experienced member.

James Praised Reaves’ Development

Before announcing his departure, James spoke about Reaves’ progress through five seasons in Los Angeles.

“Just seeing AR grow over, what, five years? It’s been nothing short of amazing,” James said after the 2025-26 campaign ended. “He’s a hard worker, loves the game, wants to get better and isn’t afraid of constructive criticism… I knew he could be a big-time player for our ballclub if he just got the opportunity and gained confidence in himself.”

With James moving on, the next opportunity belongs to Reaves, who is expected to take on a larger leadership role and face his former teammate as an opponent once the four-time MVP selects a new franchise.
