Timberwolves Make Pitch to LeBron James; Latest on Grimes, Spencer Jones and Bulls’ Guard Targets

The Minnesota Timberwolves contacted LeBron James shortly after free agency opened Tuesday, expressing interest in signing the four-time MVP, according to The Athletic. Team and league sources told the outlet the club recognizes it is unlikely to top James’ list of destinations, but believes it can offer a strong title-contending situation.

Timberwolves’ Cap Math

Minnesota sits just below the second-apron hard cap, limiting financial flexibility. Moving swingman Josh Green and his $14.7 million expiring salary could open additional space, though sources said no trade talks involving Green were active as of Tuesday. The roster already features Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball and Ayo Dosunmu in the backcourt, with Rudy Gobert anchoring the middle and Jaden McDaniels on the wing. Power forward remains a need after the departures of Julius Randle and Naz Reid.

Quentin Grimes Expected to Leave Philadelphia

Unrestricted free-agent guard Quentin Grimes will not return to the Philadelphia 76ers, The Athletic reported. League chatter continues to position the Los Angeles Lakers as the frontrunner for the 25-year-old marksman, who averaged 13.4 points and 3.3 assists last season while shooting a career-low 33.4% from three-point range.

Spencer Jones’ Bet on Himself Paying Off

Denver Nuggets forward Spencer Jones revealed on LinkedIn that he declined an in-season multiyear offer worth roughly $2 million annually in guaranteed money. After accepting a rest-of-season deal instead, the restricted free agent is now negotiating a contract worth more than twice that figure. Denver extended Jones a $2.65 million qualifying offer last week.

Bulls Eyeing Backcourt Help

The Chicago Bulls remain interested in free-agent guard Norman Powell, a league source told the Chicago Sun-Times. Chicago has also discussed a potential trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers, with Illinois native Max Strus believed to be among the Bulls’ targets. Cleveland has considered moving Strus and his $16.7 million expiring contract, though the Cavs may hesitate after losing Dean Wade and Keon Ellis in free agency.
