Los Angeles — Marcus Smart has declined his $5.4 million player option for the 2026-27 season, positioning the veteran guard to enter unrestricted free agency, league insider Chris Haynes reported Tuesday.
Smart, 32, signed a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers last summer after being bought out by the Washington Wizards. The contract included the player option he has now rejected in an effort to secure a longer, more lucrative agreement on the open market.
In his first season with Los Angeles, the former NBA Defensive Player of the Year appeared in 62 games and started 54. He averaged 9.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.4 steals while shooting 33.1 percent from three-point range. His defensive intensity and on-court leadership were widely credited with stabilizing a roster that dealt with injuries throughout the year.
Smart’s postseason performance further boosted his value. He helped the shorthanded Lakers eliminate the Houston Rockets in the opening round before the team fell to the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
Los Angeles retains the cap flexibility to re-sign Smart, but rival interest is expected. Recent reports indicate the Rockets are contemplating a three-year offer once free agency opens.
During his exit interview, Smart expressed a desire to stay in Los Angeles and continue playing alongside LeBron James. “I really don’t know. I hope so,” Smart said when asked about reuniting with the four-time MVP next season. “Being his teammate was fun. We all know the IQ that he brings to this game.”
Free agency is scheduled to begin July 1.
