A new report indicates the Cleveland Cavaliers remain on course to keep James Harden on a long-term contract.

Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reported Friday that the veteran guard is expected to decline his player option for next season and negotiate a fresh multi-year agreement with Cleveland. League sources cited by Fischer believe the pact will likely cover two years.

Harden, 34, joined the Cavaliers at the February trade deadline and averaged 20.5 points and 7.7 assists across 32 regular-season games. He then posted 19.2 points and 5.5 assists per contest in the playoffs, helping Cleveland advance to the Eastern Conference finals.

After the season-ending loss to the New York Knicks, Harden signaled his intention to stay. “Definitely want to be here,” he told reporters. “I think we found something.”

Earlier this month, Houston police arrested Harden and charged him with unlawfully carrying a weapon after officers said a handgun was visible during a traffic stop. The misdemeanor case is not expected to influence contract discussions, according to Fischer.

Harden would be opting out of the final year of his current deal to sign the new contract. Specific financial terms have not been disclosed.
