The NBA offseason opened with a seismic move, as the Milwaukee Bucks sent two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and forward Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat in a multicomponent trade finalized on June 23, 2026.
Trade details
Milwaukee receives Tyler Herro, rookie center Kelel Ware, forward Jaime Jaquez Jr., guard Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round selections—including the No. 13 pick in this year’s draft—one future pick swap and one second-round pick.
Magic Johnson reacts
Moments after the deal became public, Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson issued a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), commending Heat owner Micky Arison and CEO Nick Arison for landing “one of the league’s two best players” alongside Denver’s Nikola Jokić. Johnson also highlighted Portis’s perimeter shooting and physical style, predicting that a frontcourt featuring Bam Adebayo, Antetokounmpo and Portis will be entertaining and difficult to match.
Impact on Eastern Conference
With Antetokounmpo, 31, joining Adebayo, Miami immediately re-enters the conversation at the top of the East, alongside the defending champion New York Knicks. The Heat still have roster spots to address, but the trade restores a superstar core in South Beach.
Why the Lakers were not in play
The Los Angeles Lakers owned three future first-round picks and had shown interest when Antetokounmpo was available at February’s deadline. However, their package lacked young talent comparable to Miami’s, leaving them out of serious contention. League sources expect the transaction to be completed by July 6, and there is a possibility it could expand to include additional teams, though Antetokounmpo’s destination is set.
The deal ends nearly a year of speculation about Antetokounmpo’s future and launches new eras for both franchises as free agency begins.
