The Minnesota Timberwolves have struck a deal to keep guard Ayo Dosunmu in Minneapolis on a five-year, $112 million contract, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The final season is a player option, giving the 26-year-old control over the 2030–31 campaign.

President of basketball operations Tim Connelly labeled re-signing Dosunmu a “top priority” after the club’s exit in the Western Conference semifinals. League interest was expected if the Illinois product had hit the open market, Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic reported.

Mid-season addition pays off

Minnesota acquired Dosunmu and forward Julian Phillips from the Chicago Bulls at February’s trade deadline in exchange for Rob Dillingham, Leonard Miller and four second-round picks. The 6-foot-4 combo guard was originally drafted 38th overall by Chicago in 2021 and has outperformed many of his draft classmates.

Career year in 2025-26

In 69 regular-season games split between Chicago and Minnesota, Dosunmu averaged career highs of 14.8 points, 3.6 assists and 3.4 rebounds across 27.3 minutes while shooting 51.7 percent from the floor, 43.9 percent from three and 87.6 percent at the line.

He maintained that efficiency in the postseason, producing 15.6 points, 4.1 assists and 3.6 rebounds per contest on 50.0/42.5/92.6 shooting in 10 playoff outings. His 43-point outburst in Game 4 of the first-round series against Denver highlighted the Wolves’ run.

Roster, cap implications

Last week the Timberwolves traded Julius Randle and the No. 28 pick in this year’s draft to Brooklyn for the No. 33 selection, freeing salary to secure Dosunmu and pursue additional moves via trades or free agency.

The new agreement locks Dosunmu, Anthony Edwards, Jaden McDaniels and Naz Reid into contracts through at least the 2028-29 season. Reid is expected to take over as the starting power forward following the Randle deal, per Krawczynski.
