The Washington Wizards have reached agreement with guard Trae Young on a four-year maximum contract valued at approximately $212 million, according to The Athletic. The final season is a player option, giving the 27-year-old the ability to return to free agency in 2029-30.

By choosing a four-year pact, Young accepted terms closer to what other teams could have offered rather than a five-year max from Washington projected at $287.1 million. He became an unrestricted free agent after declining his $48.97 million option for 2026-27, though league observers expected him to stay with the Wizards, who acquired him at midseason.

The contract is set to start at an estimated $49.5 million—30 percent of the projected 2026-27 salary cap—and would rise to $56.9 million in the fourth year if Young exercises the option.

Washington’s commitment arrives one day before the club makes the No. 1 selection in the draft. With Young’s salary on the books, the front office may have to clear roster space and shed payroll to maximize use of the mid-level exception or a $13.1 million trade exception, cap analyst Yossi Gozlan noted.

Young appeared in only 15 combined games for Atlanta and Washington last season because of injuries. In 2024-25, he averaged 24.2 points and a career-best 11.6 assists across 76 contests.
