The Cleveland Cavaliers want forward Dean Wade back, but league insiders believe the 29-year-old may head elsewhere when unrestricted free agency opens, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.
Multiple teams are expected to pursue Wade, sources told Siegel, signaling that his market value could surpass what Cleveland is prepared to offer. While the Cavaliers have made re-signing Wade a priority, they acknowledge that competing bids might be hard to match.
Wade has spent all seven of his NBA seasons with Cleveland after joining the organization as an undrafted two-way player. Despite averaging only 5.8 points and 4.2 rebounds last season, the 6-foot-9 forward is viewed around the league as a versatile defender who can guard multiple positions. During this year’s playoffs, he regularly matched up against Cade Cunningham, Scottie Barnes, Brandon Ingram and Jalen Brunson.
Jake Fischer of The Stein Line previously reported that Cleveland would focus on Wade over fellow free agent Keon Ellis, though rival clubs could offer a significant portion of the non-taxpayer mid-level exception. Michael Scotto of HoopsHype has also indicated that several teams plan to show interest.
Both Wade and the Cavaliers remain open to a new agreement, but whether the final numbers align will determine if the seven-year veteran stays in Cleveland or moves on.
