One month after dismissing head coach Jason Kidd, the Dallas Mavericks still have not named a replacement, and the NBA draft is now four days away.
League sources told The Stein Line that Dallas kept its search open to give Duke head coach Jon Scheyer every chance to consider an NBA move. Scheyer coached forward Cooper Flagg during the 2024/25 season, then watched as Flagg became the Mavericks’ No. 1 overall pick last June. Despite that connection, there is ongoing skepticism about Scheyer leaving Durham for Dallas.
Similar doubt surrounds Michigan head coach Dusty May, who is also viewed as likely to stay in the college ranks for the 2026/27 season.
With those collegiate options fading, the Mavericks have focused on NBA assistants. Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori is considered a leading candidate for both Dallas and the Portland Trail Blazers, the league’s two current coaching vacancies.
Other names repeatedly linked to the Mavericks include Houston Rockets assistant Royal Ivey, Toronto Raptors assistant Jama Mahlalela, and longtime NBA head coach Terry Stotts.
Earlier in the process, Boston Celtics assistant Tony Dobbins and Miami Heat consultant Noah LaRoche were mentioned, but recent reports have not connected either coach to the opening.
The Mavericks have not announced a timetable for completing their search.
