The Brooklyn Nets intend to extend a full maximum-salary contract to Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves when free agency opens later this month, according to Dan Woike of The Athletic.

Brooklyn is not alone in its pursuit. Woike reported that the Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks are also eyeing Reaves, provided they can create sufficient cap space.

The Lakers still hold a critical edge. Under NBA rules, Los Angeles will receive an exclusive negotiating window with Reaves immediately after the NBA Finals and before the market officially opens on June 30. Team officials are expected to push for a new deal during that period, aiming to prevent rival suitors from making formal offers.

Reaves, 27, is widely anticipated to decline his player option for next season, positioning himself for what could become the richest agreement of his career. He posted career highs this past season with 23.3 points, 5.5 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game despite injury issues. Although an oblique injury affected his postseason production, league executives continue to view him as one of the NBA’s most valuable secondary playmakers.

Despite outside interest, Woike noted that Reaves prefers to remain in Los Angeles, where he has forged strong relationships with Luka Doncic, LeBron James and head coach JJ Redick. Still, league observers expect substantial competition if he enters unrestricted free agency.

The Lakers have repeatedly described Reaves as a core piece of their roster, but if negotiations stall and he reaches the open market, multiple franchises are prepared to bid aggressively for his services.
