LeBron James Leaning Toward Lakers Return, Warriors Seen as Main Suitor if Talks Stall

With unrestricted free agency opening in a matter of weeks, LeBron James is widely expected to prioritize a new contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to reporting from Jake Fischer and Marc Stein of The Stein Line and comments by ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.

James, recently named TIME Magazine’s Athlete of the Century, has spent the past eight seasons in Los Angeles. The Lakers hold his Bird rights, allowing them to exceed the salary cap to keep him, even if his 2025-26 salary comes in below the $52.6 million he earned last season.

Warriors monitor situation

Fischer and Stein identify the Golden State Warriors as the primary alternative should negotiations with the Lakers falter. League sources told the outlet that Golden State is “legitimately interested” and could pitch a commuting arrangement that lets James remain based in Los Angeles while playing in the Bay Area.

James has close relationships with Draymond Green and gained further familiarity with Stephen Curry and head coach Steve Kerr during the 2024 Olympic Games. However, unless the Warriors orchestrate a sign-and-trade deal or dramatically reshape their roster, they would be limited to offering the projected $15 million mid-level exception.

Cleveland reunion considered unlikely

Speculation about a third stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers persists, but both The Stein Line and Windhorst view the scenario as improbable. Cleveland’s current payroll would restrict any offer to a minimum-salary deal worth roughly $4 million, and the club would need to overhaul its roster to present a more competitive package.

“Everybody loves the idea of LeBron in Cleveland,” Windhorst said on The Pat McAfee Show. “But until I hear from [agent] Rich Paul that LeBron is ready to play for three million bucks, I’m not going to believe it.”

Free agency is scheduled to begin later this month.
