The Washington Wizards are still weighing their options for the first overall choice in the 2026 NBA Draft, yet league insiders widely expect BYU standout AJ Dybantsa to be the player they ultimately select, according to Sam Vecenie of The Athletic.
Vecenie reported that Washington has not finalized a decision, but multiple NBA sources continue to identify Dybantsa as the organization’s most probable target.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, the 6-foot-8 wing expressed confidence that he can speed up any rebuilding process. “It won’t take that long, especially with my adaptability and my work ethic,” Dybantsa said, comparing his forecasted impact to the rapid rise recently enjoyed by the San Antonio Spurs.
Intrigue at Picks No. 5 and No. 6
Vecenie also highlighted interest surrounding the Los Angeles Clippers and Brooklyn Nets, who currently hold the fifth and sixth selections, respectively. Both franchises have been linked to several guard prospects projected for that range and are reportedly considering trade-down scenarios.
One name connected to both teams is Michigan center Aday Mara. It remains unclear whether either club would take Mara at its current position or attempt to move back before targeting him.
The 2026 NBA Draft is scheduled to begin on June 23.
