After dropping the first two games of the NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs arrive at Madison Square Garden knowing Game 3 is essential to their championship hopes.
Guard Stephon Castle acknowledged on Monday that the team’s intensity has reached “the highest it’s been” as the Spurs attempt to avoid a 3-0 deficit against the New York Knicks.
“It’s human nature to come out with a certain sense of urgency after a loss,” Castle told reporters. “It probably shouldn’t go that way; you should come out with the same urgency whether you win or lose. Now being down 2-0, our sense of urgency is the highest it’s been.”
San Antonio nearly leveled the series in Game 2, but a late turnover and missed shots in the final minute led to a 105-104 loss. The narrow defeat shifted the Finals to New York, where a sold-out Madison Square Garden crowd awaits tonight’s tipoff.
The Spurs have navigated adversity throughout the postseason, yet Castle noted that the current challenge is their toughest to date. A loss would push San Antonio to the brink of elimination, while a win could reset the series momentum.
The Spurs and Knicks meet for Game 3 this evening in Manhattan.
