The Los Angeles Lakers have emerged as one of several teams expected to pursue New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson when he enters unrestricted free agency this summer, league sources told reporter Jake Fischer.
Fischer said executives around the NBA “regularly” point to the Chicago Bulls, Charlotte Hornets, Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors as franchises seeking an upgrade in the middle and tracking Robinson’s situation closely.
Robinson, 28, is finishing a four-year, $60 million contract he signed with New York in 2022. The 7-footer has been a key reserve during the Knicks’ current postseason run, which has them two victories away from their first championship since 1973.
The Lakers are believed to be evaluating centers capable of defending elite front-court talents such as San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama and Oklahoma City Thunder star Nikola Jokić, as they build around All-NBA guard Luka Dončić. Robinson’s rim protection, offensive rebounding and efficiency near the basket are viewed as strong complements to that strategy.
Durability remains a concern. Robinson appeared in 60 regular-season games this year and missed only one playoff contest, his highest total in several seasons. He was limited to 17 regular-season games in 2024-25 and 31 the year before, and he has topped 65 games just twice in his eight-year career.
Los Angeles will weigh those health questions against the potential impact of adding a proven interior defender. Whether the franchise commits a significant share of its cap space to Robinson may hinge on securing additional depth at the position during the offseason.
