Golden State Warriors forward Jimmy Butler has reached out directly to team officials to ask why restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga still does not have a new contract, NBC Sports Bay Area’s Dalton Johnson reported.
Training-camp media day is fast approaching, yet Kuminga remains unsigned. According to Johnson, Butler told the front office, “What’s going on here? I just want to know the plan.”
Butler, 34, forced a trade from the Miami Heat to Golden State in February and shortly after agreed to a two-year, $110 million extension. With his own future settled, he is pressing for clarity on his 22-year-old teammate.
The Warriors have reportedly offered Kuminga a three-year, $75.2 million contract that includes a team option for the third season. Agent Aaron Turner countered with a three-year, $82 million proposal featuring a player option, but general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. declined.
Complicating matters is Kuminga’s uneasy relationship with head coach Steve Kerr. Multiple reports have indicated that the two have struggled to connect, while the Sacramento Kings have privately told Kuminga they consider him an “All-Star in waiting” under coach Doug Christie.
Golden State’s $7.9 million qualifying offer to Kuminga remains on the table. Signing it would give him a no-trade clause in 2025-26 and put him on track for unrestricted free agency next summer, when several teams with cap space are expected to pursue him.
In 47 games last season, Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists. His postseason minutes spiked only when Butler and Stephen Curry were sidelined.
League sources continue to believe Kuminga will ultimately accept the qualifying offer and revisit his options in 2026.
