Spurs keep poise after Game 1 defeat, eye bounce-back effort in NBA Finals Game 2

The San Antonio Spurs insist the opening loss of the NBA Finals is merely another obstacle on their championship path as the series resumes tonight.

“We know we’re not here by chance,” rookie center Victor Wembanyama said, adding that the roster’s resilience has already been tested by “weird situations” throughout the season.

Early doubts gave way to belief

San Antonio entered training camp facing significant health concerns. Wembanyama was recovering from deep vein thrombosis that sidelined him for the final 36 games last year, Dylan Harper had recently undergone surgery on a torn ligament in his left thumb, and guard De’Aaron Fox was dealing with a lingering hamstring strain. Despite those issues, general manager Brian Wright maintained confidence in his young core.

“When we were whole last year you saw flashes of it,” Wright said, pointing to expected improvement from Wembanyama, Steph Castle, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Julian Champagnie. Wright believes Fox’s offseason arrival gave the club “a real chance” to compete with the league’s top teams.

Veteran backcourt presence seeks redemption

Fox, the most experienced member of San Antonio’s backcourt, managed just seven points on 3-for-13 shooting in Game 1. “I’ve got to make shots,” he said, acknowledging that a reduced offensive role still demands efficiency. “As a player, you sacrifice for the betterment of the team … but at the end of the day, you need to make the shots that you take.”

Johnson ready to move on

Keldon Johnson scored three points in eight minutes in the opener but vowed not to dwell on the performance. “Once the game is over, you process it that night … then you’ve got to let it go,” he said, emphasizing an even-keeled approach for the rest of the series.

Building a global superstar

Off the court, the Spurs and their partners are crafting a wide-reaching marketing plan to position Wembanyama as a worldwide icon. According to The Athletic, the 22-year-old told Nike executives last year, “I’m not gonna give basketball a choice of who the face is going to be.”

Game 2 of the Finals tips off tonight in San Antonio.
