The Orlando Magic have selected San Antonio Spurs assistant Sean Sweeney as their next head coach, marking the third coaching hire by president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman during his nine-year tenure.
Speaking with reporters, Weltman said the search differed from previous coaching hunts because Sweeney, 41, is still working the sidelines for a Spurs team preparing for the NBA Finals. “A huge thanks to the San Antonio organization,” Weltman noted, explaining that interviews were conducted on Spurs off-days. “They didn’t want to hold Sean back, and we made it work.”
After an initial meeting, Orlando moved quickly to secure Sweeney. Weltman cited the coach’s “natural intensity,” focus, and communication skills as key factors. Although Sweeney is often labeled a defensive specialist, Weltman stressed that the new hire has guided offenses as well. “I don’t know how those tags get slapped on people,” he said. “He’s been an offensive coach, too.”
The Magic finished 18th in offensive rating this season—ending a decade-long stretch in the bottom 10—while injuries hampered the roster. Their defense, top-three the previous two years, slipped to 13th. Sweeney will be tasked with boosting scoring efficiency without sacrificing defensive consistency.
Expectations in Orlando rose after last summer’s blockbuster trade for guard Desmond Bane, yet the core remains young: Paolo Banchero (23), Franz Wagner (24), Jalen Suggs (24), and Bane (27) headline a group that also includes Tristan Da Silva (24), Anthony Black (22), Noah Penda (21), Jase Richardson (20), and Jett Howard (22). Weltman said the organization is still taking a “long view” despite recent progress.
“When you put together his intensity, integrity, character, and relentless work ethic,” Weltman concluded, “those ingredients are what you hope can lead to a really special coach.”
