LOS ANGELES — Luka Doncic reiterated this week that capturing an NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers remains his foremost goal, even as he steps into team ownership overseas.
The All-Star guard, speaking to The New York Times, confirmed that his recent investment in Italian club Vanoli Cremona will not distract from his pursuit of a title in purple and gold. “Obviously I’ve started thinking a little bit,” Doncic said. “But I’m a Laker, and winning the championship right now is the most important thing for me.”
Doncic joined a consortium that purchased the northern Italian franchise earlier this month. The group intends to relocate the team to Rome and position it for the NBA’s proposed European league, which could launch as soon as next season. Doncic has told associates he wants to be a hands-on owner, helping build the organization long-term.
Even so, the 27-year-old emphasized that his primary focus remains on the court at Crypto.com Arena. He believes the Lakers were close to contention this season before injuries to him and guard Austin Reaves disrupted a promising March run. General manager Rob Pelinka has pointed to that stretch as evidence the current roster core can succeed, and league sources say Doncic has maintained regular dialogue with Pelinka and ownership about offseason moves.
Doncic scored 34 points in a March 27 win over the Brooklyn Nets, one of several performances that fueled the Lakers’ surge before the injury setbacks. He is under contract through 2030 after signing a max extension last summer.
The Slovenian star joins a growing list of NBA players expanding into business ventures while still active. For Doncic, owning a European club fulfills a long-held ambition that began during his teenage years at Real Madrid. Yet, he made clear that lifting the Larry O’Brien Trophy in Los Angeles remains the ultimate benchmark.
