LeBron James has not publicly committed to any course of action for next season, and sources told ESPN’s Brian Windhorst the four-time MVP will keep everyone guessing until the Los Angeles Lakers lay out both a contract proposal and a comprehensive roster strategy.
Speaking on The Hoop Collective podcast, Windhorst said James and his representatives expect the Lakers to deliver a formal offer. If that proposal falls short of the maximum salary, the All-Star’s camp wants specifics on how the team would use the remaining cap space and which players the front office intends to pursue.
Windhorst added that, while no move is imminent, a sign-and-trade would be the most straightforward financial route should James decide to chase a title elsewhere without sacrificing earnings. If the 39-year-old were willing to accept a smaller salary, Windhorst named the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors as theoretical landing spots.
Cleveland draws obvious interest because of James’s history there, while Golden State continues to surface after his successful on-court stint with Stephen Curry during the 2024 Olympics.
For now, there is no concrete indication James plans to leave Los Angeles—or even that he will definitely play next year. After completing his age-41 season, he still produced 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game while sharing the spotlight with Luka Dončić.
The timeline for a decision remains unclear, ensuring another offseason dominated by the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
