The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to explore the center market this offseason, but the cost of the most coveted name just climbed. Detroit Pistons big man Jalen Duren, 22, made the All-NBA Third Team, triggering eligibility for a maximum contract worth up to 30% of next season’s salary cap.
According to Front Office Sports reporter Alex Schiffer, the All-NBA selection adds roughly $37 million to what Duren can earn on his next deal. Because he is a restricted free agent, the Pistons hold matching rights and can present a five-year package valued at $287 million, beginning at about $49.5 million in 2026-27.
Any rival bidder, including the Lakers, is limited to a four-year offer projected at $177.4 million, starting near $42.25 million in the first season. Los Angeles is one of the few teams with the cap space to reach that figure.
Duren earned his postseason accolade by averaging 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and shooting 65% from the field during the regular campaign. Production tailed off in the playoffs—10.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, 51.4% shooting—leading to late-game bench stints as Detroit’s postseason ended quickly.
The Lakers are evaluating whether the athletic 6-10 center is worth a near-max commitment alongside Luka Doncic. Even if Los Angeles meets the ceiling, Detroit can retain Duren by matching.
Los Angeles is also linked to unrestricted free-agent center Robert Williams III, coming off his healthiest season with the Portland Trail Blazers.
