Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is expected to be named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row, according to multiple sources who spoke with ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The league plans to reveal the winner Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime Video, moments before Game 7 of the Cleveland-Detroit series.
Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.1 points, 6.6 assists and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 55.3 percent from the field, helping the Thunder post a league-best 64 victories and advance deep into the postseason.
If confirmed, he will become the first player since Nikola Jokić (2021-22) to secure back-to-back MVP honors and the first guard to do so since Stephen Curry. Over the past four seasons, he and Michael Jordan are the only players to record at least 30 points and five assists per game while shooting 50 percent.
The 25-year-old scored 20 or more points in every game this season, a feat previously achieved only by Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor. His league-leading plus-minus of +788 was well ahead of second-place finisher Victor Wembanyama.
A championship this spring would place Gilgeous-Alexander alongside Michael Jordan, Bill Russell and LeBron James as players who captured consecutive MVPs and NBA titles in the same span.
