Victor Wembanyama delivered another standout postseason performance on Friday, posting 39 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks to guide the San Antonio Spurs to a 115-108 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 3. The win gives San Antonio a 2-1 advantage in the first-round series.
The 7-foot-4 rookie connected on 13 of 18 shots and poured in 16 points in the fourth quarter. “We had a lead. We didn’t need to rush. We needed to be consistent,” Wembanyama said after the game.
Head coach Mitch Johnson kept his star on the floor despite a fifth personal foul late in the fourth. “We were going to play him, and then if he fouled out, we deal with that,” Johnson explained. Wembanyama stayed aggressive, knocking down a late three-pointer that extended the margin to six and grabbing a key rebound on the next possession. San Antonio never trailed after halftime.
De’Aaron Fox added 17 points, while rookie guard Stephon Castle finished with 13 points and 12 assists for the Spurs.
Minnesota rallied from an early 18-3 deficit to tie the game at the break. Anthony Edwards paced the Timberwolves with 32 points and 14 rebounds. “I told the guys we had a bunch of great looks. If we make our shots, we win this game,” Edwards said. Head coach Chris Finch added, “Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the result.”
Game 4 is scheduled for Sunday, with the Timberwolves aiming to even the series and the Spurs looking to move within one win of advancing.
