The New York Knicks will open training camp with one job still unfilled on a roster that already features 12 guaranteed contracts.
Because the club is operating under second-apron limitations, president Leon Rose can add only two more players: one on a veteran minimum deal and another on a rookie minimum. The veteran slot has come down to three names, according to people familiar with the team’s planning.
Three contenders
Malcolm Brogdon, who turns 33 in December, offers the most decorated résumé of the group. The guard captured the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award in 2023 and has long been regarded as one of the league’s most efficient perimeter players.
Landry Shamet made a positive impression at Madison Square Garden last season, averaging 5.7 points while knocking down nearly 40 percent of his three-point attempts in a reserve role.
Garrison Mathews rounds out the trio. Known for his energy, physicality and outside shooting, the 27-year-old could supply another floor-spacing option for head coach Tom Thibodeau.
Next step: training camp
The Knicks will use camp to evaluate how each veteran fits alongside a rotation already anchored by Jalen Brunson, Julius Randle and RJ Barrett. One candidate will leave with a contract; the others will have to look elsewhere.
New York must finalize its regular-season roster before opening night later this fall.
