Houston, TX — Moments after guiding the Los Angeles Lakers past the Houston Rockets in Game 6 of the first round, LeBron James told Amazon Prime Video that his long-running battle with aging is finished—and that he won.
“I’m kicking his ass. He already lost to me. It’s over with,” the 41-year-old forward said during a post-game interview with broadcaster Taylor Rooks on May 1 at Toyota Center.
James just completed his 23rd NBA season, the first player in league history to reach that mark. Despite the unprecedented mileage, he averaged 23.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 8.3 assists over the six-game series against Houston’s highly rated defense, leading Los Angeles to a 4-2 victory.
In the locker room afterward, the four-time MVP explained that his outlook has shifted. “At this stage of my career, I think I’ve talked about just living in the moment a little bit more and being OK with celebrating the small victories,” he told reporters, acknowledging that advancing out of the first round feels different than it once did.
James’ ability to maintain elite production deep into his forties has fueled a popular narrative that “Father Time is undefeated.” For now, the league’s oldest active player insists that cliché no longer applies to him—and the stats backing the Lakers’ latest series win give his claim some weight.
