Head coach Quin Snyder is gaining momentum toward a contract extension with the Atlanta Hawks after steering the club to a 19-5 finish following the trade of star guard Trae Young, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line. Snyder has one season remaining on his current deal, and extension negotiations are expected shortly after Atlanta’s campaign ends.
The Hawks are also expected to engage CJ McCollum in talks when the veteran guard reaches unrestricted free agency this summer. Fischer reports mutual interest in a new agreement.
Lake Show eyes Kennard
The Los Angeles Lakers could create significant cap space, but much depends on decisions involving their own free agents, including LeBron James and Austin Reaves. One name gaining traction in the front office is Luke Kennard, whom the Lakers hope to keep, per Fischer. With only Non-Bird rights, Los Angeles can start a new deal at up to $13.2 million—120 percent of Kennard’s current $11 million salary—though the club could exceed that figure by using cap room or, if operating over the cap, the non-taxpayer mid-level exception.
Bulls positioned for RFA centers
Jalen Duren (Pistons), Walker Kessler (Jazz) and Mark Williams (Suns) are expected to explore offer-sheet leverage with the Chicago Bulls, who project to hold the NBA’s largest cap space this offseason. Fischer notes that Chicago’s ability to extend a sizable offer could pressure current teams to match or risk losing their restricted free-agent centers.
Morant market heating up
The Utah Jazz are not viewed as a realistic destination for Ja Morant, quashing speculation of a reunion with former teammate Jaren Jackson Jr. Nonetheless, Fischer hears that league interest in trading for Morant should increase this summer compared with February’s minimal activity.
