HOUSTON — The Los Angeles Lakers own a surprising 3–1 lead over the Houston Rockets after Sunday’s Game 4 of the Western Conference first round, a stretch accomplished without injured guards Luka Doncic (Grade 2 left hamstring strain) and Austin Reaves (Grade 2 left oblique strain). Veteran shooter Luke Kennard has filled the scoring void, averaging 17.8 points while hitting 52.2 percent from the floor and 45.0 percent from three-point range.
Acquired at February’s trade deadline, Kennard has become the Lakers’ secondary option behind LeBron James. The nine-year guard said he is comfortable with any role as long as it translates into victories.
“I’m nine years into this league and the only thing that matters is winning,” Kennard said. “If that means taking 17 shots against Dallas or just a handful in the next game, that’s fine by me.”
Playoff résumé guides approach
This postseason marks Kennard’s fifth appearance but only the second time he can advance past the opening round. He reached the 2021 Western Conference Finals with the L.A. Clippers but was eliminated in the first round with the Detroit Pistons in 2019 and the Memphis Grizzlies in 2023 and 2025.
$25,000 fine after heated Game 4
The Lakers’ lone loss of the series came in the contentious Game 4 at Toyota Center. Several players were ejected, and post-game jawing continued at mid-court. The NBA fined Kennard $25,000 for remarks directed at an official once the final buzzer sounded.
The series shifts to Crypto.com Arena for Game 5, where Los Angeles will attempt to close out Houston and send Kennard to the second round for just the second time in his career.
