One week after the 2026 NBA postseason tipped off, every first-round matchup still features at least one victory by the lower-seeded club. Below is a snapshot of where each series stands, the pressing issue facing every team, which free agents are boosting or hurting their market value, and how the eight showdowns rank by upset potential.

Eastern Conference

(8) Orlando Magic lead (1) Detroit Pistons, 2-1
Detroit’s 60-win campaign is in jeopardy in large part because All-Star center Jalen Duren has been neutralized. After averaging 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 65% shooting in the regular season, Duren is down to 9.0 points on 3-for-10 shooting in Game 3 and has been outplayed by Wendell Carter Jr., who grabbed eight offensive boards in that contest.

(2) Boston Celtics lead (7) Philadelphia 76ers, 3-1
Boston has generated a steady stream of three-point looks and, outside of a 13-for-50 night in Game 2, has connected at a high rate. Joel Embiid returned less than three weeks after an emergency appendectomy, but Philadelphia still trails badly in the math game heading into Game 5.

(3) New York Knicks tied with (6) Atlanta Hawks, 2-2
Karl-Anthony Towns recorded 10 assists from the high post in Game 4, easing New York’s reliance on Jalen Brunson. Towns’ overall playoff output now tops his career averages, but questions remain about how many touches he will receive the rest of the way.

(4) Cleveland Cavaliers tied with (5) Toronto Raptors, 2-2
James Harden and Donovan Mitchell combined for 22 turnovers during two losses in Toronto. For Cleveland to advance, its star backcourt must overcome the Raptors’ increased pressure and Scottie Barnes’ defense.

Western Conference

(1) Oklahoma City Thunder lead (8) Phoenix Suns, 3-0
Head coach Mark Daigneault owns an 11-0 first-round record over the past three years. The Thunder now chase a third straight sweep after preventing Phoenix from holding a second-half lead in any game.

(2) San Antonio Spurs lead (7) Portland Trail Blazers, 3-1
Victor Wembanyama, back from concussion protocol, has limited Portland to 5-for-30 shooting on attempts he contested. San Antonio hopes to clinch at home and give guards Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper extra time to recover from thumb injuries.

(6) Minnesota Timberwolves lead (3) Denver Nuggets, 3-1
Jaden McDaniels has hounded Jamal Murray into 33-for-89 shooting (37% overall, 26.5% from deep), while Rudy Gobert’s length has pushed Nikola Jokić to 39.1% from the field. Minnesota lost Donte DiVincenzo to a torn Achilles and is awaiting Anthony Edwards’ return from a bone bruise.

(4) Los Angeles Lakers lead (5) Houston Rockets, 3-1
Houston’s Game 4 rout forces a Game 5 in Los Angeles. Lakers guard Austin Reaves (Grade 2 left oblique strain) has not yet appeared, though head coach JJ Redick said the final hurdle is the player’s own confidence. Luka Dončić (Grade 2 left hamstring strain) remains without a timetable despite light on-court work.

Free-Agency Stock Watch

Stock Up
• Ayo Dosunmu, Minnesota — traded from Chicago in February, the reserve guard is averaging 22.8 points on 64% shooting and poured in 43 points in Game 4, the second-highest playoff total ever by a bench player. He is extension-eligible for three years and $52.4 million.
• CJ McCollum, Atlanta — the 34-year-old has posted 24.5 points per game and recorded the second-most points in Hawks playoff history through three outings. He can sign a three-year, $115.9 million extension before June 30.

Stock Down
• Jalen Duren, Detroit — points in the paint have dropped from 14.6 in the regular season to 6.7.
• Payton Watson, Denver — sidelined since Feb. 4 with a hamstring injury after averaging 14.9 points.
• Mark Williams, Phoenix — missed the postseason despite playing a career-high 60 games and anchoring the club’s jump from 26th to sixth in second-chance points.

Upset Potential: Series Ranking

  1. Los Angeles Lakers 3-1 Houston Rockets — L.A. owns home-court and needs one win; Reaves is close to returning while Houston’s Kevin Durant is banged up.
  2. Minnesota Timberwolves 3-1 Denver Nuggets — the Wolves are one victory away but must do it without Edwards and DiVincenzo.
  3. Orlando Magic 2-1 Detroit Pistons — the eighth seed has controlled most of the minutes and all five starters are in double figures.
  4. New York Knicks 2-2 Atlanta Hawks — two Knicks wins came by 27 combined points, but Atlanta’s six-man rotation has found rhythm.
  5. Cleveland Cavaliers 2-2 Toronto Raptors — Toronto showed it can win with offense (43-point fourth quarter) and defense (held Cleveland to 89 points).
  6. Boston Celtics 3-1 Philadelphia 76ers — the 76ers’ lone win required 49% shooting from three; repeating that three straight times is unlikely.
  7. San Antonio Spurs 3-1 Portland Trail Blazers — the Blazers led by 17 at halftime of Game 4 before a 73-35 Spurs avalanche.
  8. Oklahoma City Thunder 3-0 Phoenix Suns — Phoenix has yet to lead in any second half.

The first round continues Monday when Oklahoma City can become the postseason’s first team to advance, while Detroit and Orlando resume their series Tuesday.
