The NBA’s Last Two Minute Report issued Saturday ruled that Los Angeles Lakers guard Marcus Smart crossed the foul line early on a crucial free throw during the closing seconds of Game 3 of the first-round series against the Houston Rockets.
According to the report, Smart stepped over the line before the ball reached the rim with 25.5 seconds remaining in regulation. The attempt trimmed Houston’s advantage from four points to three. Smart was shooting three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt.
Los Angeles eventually forced overtime and secured a 112-108 victory, outscoring Houston 11-7 in the extra period. Smart contributed eight of his 21 points in overtime.
The fourth-seeded Lakers now lead the best-of-seven series 3-0 over the fifth-seeded Rockets.
Houston played without star forward Kevin Durant in Games 1 and 3 because of multiple injuries. Head coach Ime Udoka said Saturday that Durant is rehabbing a sprained left ankle and hopes to be available for Sunday’s Game 4.
